Generic Domains are vital for Search Engine Marketing

by The System on February 20th, 2009

It’s vital that you invest in a generic domain name or two as part of your internet marketing arsenal. Without doubt the keywords in the URL count in all the SE’s algorithms, but those with keywords nearer the root, i.e the url or domain name itself will see much better results in the SERPS.

You only have to search on any keyword to see that the majority of high ranking sites that are not well known brands, are generic domain names.

Why?

Because they are what they say they are (usually) and therefore the content can be relied upon enough for further investigation and ranking.

Because someone or another has gone out of their way to register the keyword before anyone else, they gain a natural advantage with the SE’s.

Generic domain names are also investment properties with aged domains the most sought after as they hold more standing with the search engines.

If you are going to blog, it is important that you host the site on your own preferably generic domain, which allows you choice of platform and independence, control of your own content, and a website which is then ringfenced from any changes to the blog host.
