The World Cup Social Media Marketing Experiment

Those of you who know me personally will know that there is only one reason I work apart from to support my family…… and that’s Football. Soccer to you guys……

Why Football?

The great British anthroplogist Desmond Morris once wrote a fantastic book and TV series about the beautiful game – check it out on Amazon if you want to understand the madness that is ravaging this country and SA and most other places around this satellite buzzing globe as from Today……

In the UK (not just England) it’s all about identity, where you are from, your colours, pack instinct, local rivalry, top of the league……. etc etc. ……..and it’s about Passion!

Sound Familiar?

Yeah! It’s just like Search engine marketing

But Football is so much more than that because it is SOCIAL!

The only effective Internet Marketing of today is social media marketing, marketing to the crowd!

And where do you find the biggest most passionate crowds?

You got it……..

So with this in mind I started a long time ago to think about how I could Capitalise on this and over the years have built up a very large and respectable network of football sites.

 These football sites  cover every level of the game  from directories at the top of Google to club level sites selling Amazon product feeds, ticket sites, blogs, soccer schools and Football in the Community sites I run for actual professional English league teams and Sports events companies!

I’ve spent a fortune on Football over the years – like I said, it’s passion, and following England at the World Cup and going to World Cup Finals since 1990 has been a privilege…

Thanks to the recession I won’t be in South Africa!

The World Cup Social Media Marketing Experiment

Incredibly world cup tickets are the cheapest they’ve been in 30 Years! If you are in South Africa and can pick them up, you can still get tickets for tommorrows  England v USA match for as little as £90!

So that stuffed my idea of making any money on England Tickets

So then came the idea that if all the fans are going to stay at home - let’s market to the England football crowd at home!

Yeah OK – This has to be official!

Only official products and the perfect source was Amazon datafeeds…..

So we set up the England Football Shop!

Now even with all the weight of a very large and authoratitive niche network of football sites, getting to the top of Google for any meaningful buying keywords is going to be very difficult at this late stage of what is effectively ‘seasonal marketing’.

So we decided to turn to social media as the prime driver of traffic. We’ve set up the usual Facebook and Twitter accounts and now the experiment commences……..

The hypothesis of the experiment is that we can astronomically increase our reach and sales funnel by attracting ‘friends’ and ‘followers’ by creating continual football buzz!

You can follow along over the next four  weeks as we report on various findings about building social media networks in rapido time around an event!
